Carl W. Martin, 1930-2003, Butler

Carl William Martin, 73, of Butler, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

He was born Oct. 24, 1930, in Edina, a son of Kenneth Ted and Edith Grace Stewart Martin. On Nov. 11, 1956, in Butler, he was married to Mary Minter, who survives, of Butler.

Mr. Martin was raised in Kirkwood, where he attended grade school. He worked in construction on some of Missouri's major highways in the early 1950s. His work included state Route 13. He began his service station operation, Carl's Skelly, in 1966. Through the years the station changed names to Carl's Getty, Carl's Texaco and Carl's Sinclair. To date, it is the only full-service gas station left in Butler. He was a member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, bowling and watching Chiefs football, Royals baseball and the Missouri Tigers. He also liked duck and quail hunting and trout fishing.

Also surviving are two sons, Ted Martin, of Stilwell, Kan., and Phillip Martin, of Butler; three daughters, Barbara Walker, of Sedalia, Carol Embry, of Layton, Utah, and Kimberly Lowrimore, of Blue Springs; a sister, Shirley Hernandez, of Altus, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Martin; his parents, and his stepfather, Lewis Rhodus.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel in Butler, with the Rev. Jule Maskrod officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Calvary Baptist Church Youth Fund.
